What is the difference between a physio and a sports physio?

Physiotherapy is a form of treatment in which patients suffering from illnesses, injuries or disabilities are helped to recover using physical methods such as exercise, massage, and heat and cold treatments. Sports Physio is primarily concerned with sports injuries. While still requiring the same core knowledge as a regular physiotherapist, Sports Physio might have additional qualifications to enable them to diagnose and treat issues that arise during athletic pursuits.

These have a detailed understanding of human movement, biomechanics and anatomy, which assists them in understanding the particular needs of athletes. Sports physios can help those who play competitive sports in the areas of injury prevention and rehabilitation.

What does a sports physio in Auckland do?

A sports physiotherapist uses a combination of techniques to help clients rehabilitate after they have sustained an injury. A combined action plan can involve personalised assessments and treatments, as well as exercise programs that aim to speed up recovery times.

The aim is to work with the client’s injury and needs, helping them to regain full range of motion and strength in their affected area. Injury prevention is often a focus for sports physios, where training programs may be used to strengthen the body’s targeted areas or identify signs of warning.

What should I wear to my physiotherapy session?

It is important to wear the appropriate clothing for your physiotherapy session to allow for maximal movement and to assess, treat and demonstrate exercises effectively. While keeping comfort in mind, avoid wearing clothing that is restrictive or too loose, as it may limit the effectiveness of your therapy.

Muscle Balance Assessment

The Muscle Balance Assessment is a comprehensive one-hour appointment designed to give an in-depth analysis of your overall muscle health. It considers any past injuries or biomechanical issues that could be causing pain or interfering with optimal performance. The analysis looks at muscle length/tightness and strength, as well as any poor movement strategies or inappropriate sports-related techniques. All this data is put together in a report format so you can closely follow your progress, and if difficulties arise then, exercise to help remedy these issues can be taught during a follow-up appointment. Additionally, we are more than willing to communicate with professionals already involved in your care, such as medical trainers, coaches, Pilates Instructors, etc., all to create a safe and favourable treatment path for you specifically.

We can help you overcome:

  • Sports injuries

  • Running injuries

  • Headaches

  • Muscle imbalances

  • Back pain/ neck pain

  • Knee pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Foot and ankle pain

And much more…
